    Ralph Hernandez Reflection Paper

During the beginning of the Hialeah Stairwell project, my fellow classmates and I were introduced to Michelle Weinberg. She gladly introduced us to the main concept of the project and its general purpose. Our first assignment was to draw the first picture we see in our minds when we think of clouds. These clouds met no real requirements and could take on any shape or form. These clouds would later be included as paintings to the stairwell project. On Sunday, April 5, I volunteered to work from roughly 12:00 until about 5:30. I assisted in painting some of the edges of the light fixtures with a blue paint. Then Weinberg allowed me to paint the clouds I had a drawn in class some time ago. Thus I drew an abstractly shaped clouds, between the third and fourth floor, in which each lump of the cloud represented each member of my family (the larger the lump, the older the member). Afterwards, Michelle Weinberg politely asked me if I could paint another cloud on the fourth floor. Thus I painted a mushroom shaped figure that resembles the same mushroom from the Super Mario Bros. video game. On Tuesday of that same week I assisted Michelle Weinberg and my fellow classmates in doing the finishing touches. I painted the blue above the fourth floor door and behind the pipes directly in front of the door. Lastly I aided Michelle Weinberg, my classmates, and professor Donis in finishing up the remaining pizzas (so they would go to waste).

This stairwell painting has given me a great experience; I have gotten to familiarize myself with an unknown median, I got free pizza, and I contributed to the school. Making this stairway look beautiful has made me feel certain usefulness to the community in a whole. I have never really participated in any community activities because I didn’t really think it would mean much. This project has allowed me to give beauty to an object and give it life, something I never really done before on any other canvas besides paper. I feel like I have helped opened a doorway, like I have helped give out an invitation to students to come use the stairs and appreciate the art that this stairwell beholds. I have told a few of my friends at this college to look at the painting of the mushroom I made on the fourth floor. I would have expected them to no t go since it was on the fourth floor, but in fact they want. Not only that but they had told others who then would go to see this paint and then tell others. It get this pride building up in side when I think about it, I really help people in an unconscious manner. Many students have taken a healthier alternative to change floors without even realizing it. Help making these stairs aesthetic has attracted student’s curiosity to this healthier alternative and away from the stairs.

Making this stairway beautiful has helped the environment. The less use of elevators reduces the amount of electricity being used and thus reduces pollution. Less electricity also means the college saves on the electric bill. I’m not trying to say that one should not use the elevator at all, but to have a balance in using the elevator and using the stairs. This has given me the opportunity to help expose people to art in its many forms through theses clouds. I feel like I have expressed my feelings towards art, that (through my two clouds) I have helped show that art can be whimsical and it can also portray a message. With all the artworks of my classmates and I (as well as Michelle Weinberg’s) this stairway as become a beautiful modern masterpiece. A masterpiece that has helped tip the balance towards using the stairs rather than the elevator. This project has helped the students, as well as the college, a little more sustainable.

I would like to begin by thanking professor Donis and Michelle Weinberg for having the opportunity to take part in the art done on the stairs. I have found that the stairs really did create a different atmosphere for the people using them. The stairs were boring, dull, and monotone as students would use them. Even before we were done, the stairs automatically got the attention of students walking by trying to see what was going on. Other students actually got a firsthand peak into the stairs because they did not read the paper on the door and would stay in a state of pause seeing bright blue paint on the walls. I really do hope that the stairs have inspired people to take the stairs instead of the elevators; but hopefully students stay motivated rather than get distracted and arrive to class late. The stairs were painted to show off sustainability, because it is a bunch of clouds in which show nature. Sustainability was difficult to explain, however the stairs do inspire a healthier life style and a more motivated determination for students. Not to mention if students use the stairs, we are saving electricity.
I participated on the stairwell painting on April 6th from 1-4. Although it was not a lot of time, I really would have liked to have spent more time there. I painted the words on the cloud of the third floor that say “go with the flow.” Although my favorite clouds were the car and the mushroom, I liked my saying because in my opinion it was the perfect phrase for what we were trying to create, a staircase that showed sustainability. “Go with the flow” can motivate but still keep a peaceful and tranquil ecosystem. Other than that cloud I also helped painting the letters on the last giant cloud right before reaching the fourth floor and painting the shadows on a few of the already painted words. I had a blast the duration of my time painting and talking to my friends, people I just had met, and Michelle Weinberg. Michelle was extremely nice to all of us and she made it easy to all of us to be involved in the staircase. Although it was a small stairwell, the heat grew as the day advanced, and water ran out there were many interesting moments from the pizza Donis bought, to him playing the piano, to a kid that had a lama tattoo, and one that was complaining for being the tall one because he got stuck painting most of the wall on the fourth floor. Overall, I am extremely proud to be a part of the group that helped make it possible.

  3. This project in general has been somewhat of an impact in my life. It’s showed me how one work of art can help students with their feelings toward school. Instead of walking up to classes in a boring stairwell where you felt as if you were in a jail cell they now can walk through a beautiful stairwell filled with lovely pictures. Added to this, I did do all of the other activities #'s 1-5. I stayed on Monday the 6th from 11-4 for two shifts. It was such a great experience because of the fun I had in with all the other students and helped the community in some way in making it look better. I’d like to thank both Michelle and Donis for including me in this great project. When it comes down to what I did do, I was honestly was all over the place from the bottom of the stairs to the top outlining the words. :] I really enjoyed it though, I would’ve loved to stay but I was there for a long time as it was and was pretty tired. I also liked many of the quotes or words that were put around the stairwell. Many of these words made a big impact in what it was all about – the sustainability of everything. “Sky is the limit, Paso a Paso, Loading” all different phrases, even in a different language but still gave out the same message. During the time I was painting I met new friends and Michelle Weinberg who was very friendly from the start. I’m very appreciative in the fact that she did welcome us with open arms to help her with this project and had us feel comfortable with everything. Some things that did happen are so called – PRICELESS. From the pizza that Donis bought us for appreciation of our help and his playing on the piano. Another would be the gathering of all the students for this one change as well as the boy with the lama tattoo. I could only be proud of this one deed I did that’s going to be there for a while <3 - georgina

  4. At first, I wasn’t looking forward to painting this project. But once I got started, I was actually having fun. When I got there, Michelle was very nice and showed us basic painting techniques in order for the floor not to get painted on. We then started helping Michelle setting up the buckets of water and taking the ladders to different floors. It was so hot, but Michelle had the doors open of each floor for us. She first told me to go to the last floor and give the mushroom cloud two coats. I spent about forty five minutes maximum giving it the two coats. Once I was done, she sent me to the first floor and I did the flower cloud. I would have to say this is my second favorite because its beautiful in my eyes. My all time favorite cloud was the car one. It just came out so perfect. The car cloud was very unique and I know when others see it, they’ll stop and admire its perfection. Around two o’clock, the pizza arrived and we ate all three boxes in 10 minutes. Professor Donis then played the piano for us. It was a fun experience and I thank Michelle Weinberg and Professor Donis for this opportunity; like Donis said “Your art will always be there”. I feel so accomplished and proud of myself for doing such a great job at painting clouds. Before this project, I thought clouds were just clouds. But clouds are so much more. They can be seen in various ways based on your creativity and imagination. This contributes to making Hialeah college students healthier and more sustainable in many ways. Most of my friends that attend Hialeah campus tell me they mainly use the stairs, so when they use them, students will have a positive attitude. The clouds were used to basically represent “the sky is the limit”. Another great quote painted here was “Dream Big”. If a student is having a horrible day, these clouds will remind them that there’s better things out there and they shouldn’t be so negative. These clouds will persuade students to strive for more excellence. Everyday students use these stairs, they will be given positive attitude. This project gives the campus so much life and color. The building inside looks so boring but once you open the door to the stairs, you see a beautiful sky. Even when it’s raining outside, the skies will be clear inside. Not only does this project add life to the campus but inspiration for the students in order to reach new heights.
